Ban Wet Markets

Updated: Apr 11, 2020

Wet markets are a place where live and dead animals are being sold around the world. These markets are prevalent throughout countries like Europe, Africa, and more, the most prominent being China. At the wet markets, animals are being abused, brutally killed, and kept in cages to be inhumanely sold. Exclusive footage by Animal Equality at wet markets in China reveals many animals for sale living in horrible conditions, where they are starved and suffering from many diseases.

With the new outbreak of COVID-19, better known as the coronavirus, wet markets have now become a public health concern/crisis. The coronavirus outbreak is believed to have originated in a wet market in Wuhan, China. These wild animals that wet markets are selling to the public have a high risk of having many diseases, resulting in the passing over of these diseases to humans. That is why the United Nations has stepped in and recommended that wet markets should be banned internationally to protect the health of humans and also these animals.

Not only are wet markets a harmful threat to humans, but also to animals, who are being treated cruelly and violently. Animal abuse cannot continue to happen in the world without punishment. If the government won't make a change, then it's up to communities to step up and fight for animal rights since these creatures are unable to. Even doing the smallest things, like creating petitions to ban wet markets, or spreading awareness over social media can go a long way. The world needs to recognize now that it's time to do the right thing and ban wet markets once and for all.
