The first season of the documentary Tiger King recently came out on Netflix on March 20, 2020, and has immediately become a great hit with many viewers during this pandemic. The seven-part documentary focuses on zoo owner Joe Exotic's strange life complete with many unusual characters, who are in a society full of big cat lovers that have made zoos/shelters just for these animals. The documentary mixes in mystery, true crime, politics, cults, and more to captivate viewers into a wild rollercoaster of television. Many are praising the show for its humor and overall strangeness that leads lots to enjoy it so much. Unfortunately, the problem with this documentary is that people are missing the immoral points in the show that is being showcased to the rest of the world.
It's so easy for viewers to get caught up easily in the human drama occurring and spend less time focusing on the animals that are sadly the real victims. In one instance in episode four, near the end, Joe Exotic is shown to be dragging a newborn tiger cub using a steel hook away from its mother, who appears to still be in labor. The cub is crying out and is put under a metal fence. Afterword, Joe Exotic complains about how loud the cubs' cries are. Other abuse includes Exotic hitting an animal with a crutch and also another member on the show packing cubs into a suitcase. Further proof provided by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) shows a person working undercover at Joe Exotic's zoo in 2011. HSUS recently posted footage from their undercover investigation showing workers including Joe Exotic abusing the tigers and committing horrible acts of violence upon them.
So, what's the takeaway from all this? Shows like these mask the truth about animals by entrancing viewers into their own dramas, leaving them to do whatever they want to these animals on camera and also behind the scenes. Ultimately, I strongly encourage viewers to take a step back from all the humans and their drama and take a good examination of the animals that are on the show as well.
